Historically, the ketogenic diet has been a therapeutic diet for individuals suffering from epilepsy however now has gained some attention as a weight loss diet. Weight loss is seen with the ketogenic diet because it is a highly restrictive diet. The ketogenic diet is high in fat and protein while limiting fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. If you are pregnant, nursing, going through medical treatment, diabetic, have a history of kidney stones, or an eating disorder, you should AVOID the ketogenic diet. If you are considering going “keto” please consult the advice of a Registered Dietitian. Keep in mind, many of the keto “experts” found on the web are not medical professionals.
